The Forbidden City was the dwelling of the Emperor from te Ming to the Ching dyansties. It was forbidden because only the emperor and his family (including concubines) were allowed in side. The general Chinese population did not see the inside of the Forbidden City until 1912 with the fall of the Ching dynasty and the founding of the Chinese rebublic by Sun-Yat Sen.
